If Grell hadn't ...You're absolutely right. If Grell hadn't gone into an explanation, with thicknesses of the shell and width of the holes at the poles, I could have probably bought into it. Instead, there are two places in the first couple of stories where Morgan is lecturing Tara (with diagrams!) and clearly makes some incorrect statements about gravity. If Grell had said magic and left it at that, I could go along with it. At this point, there really hasn't been a lot of magic, and I think Grell was going for the pseudoscientific approach.

I can buy bogus science if the story is set in the past and the science is based on what was known at the time because I can put myself in the mindset of someone from that era. But explanations that are known to be false at the time of the story, not so much.Adventuresfantastichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16907562789681407416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4593182832464558023.post-58748579200442311592012-07-31T09:40:12.217-05:002012-07-31T09:40:12.217-05:00As for gravity, etc., I think it is a whole lot wi...As for gravity, etc., I think it is a whole lot wiser for hollow Earth settings never to try explaining how they physically work. It is easier to suspend disbelief if we're just tossed into the world. Throwing shoddy science at it only increases the chance of disbelief. I ...Paul, I haven't seen the tpb you refer to. I may look it up just from morbid curiosity. From what I understand, it's not as good as the original. I don't have a complete run of the comic, but there's a black and white reprint available in the Showcase line that contains 1stIS and Warlord 1-28, which I'm reading until I get to where I have actual copies of the book.

Charles, do you recall if you read early or late issues? Or were they part of the miniseries that ran in the early 90s? After Grell quit scripting the book, it went downhill. Once the book become part of the regular DC universe, it went into a nosedive. They even had Powergirl flying around. I mean, seriously? Powergirl?! Gimme a break.Adventuresfantastichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16907562789681407416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4593182832464558023.post-40090594951013227362012-07-31T08:55:21.712-05:002012-07-31T08:55:21.712-05:00I read a couple of these back in the 90s but never...I read a couple of these back in the 90s but never really warmed to the character much.
